NPL Round 1

YOUTH

The Bears youth set about season 2017 in scintillating style.
Facing the visiting Charlestown Blues on a super day for football, the young Weston sides were very impressive.

Well done to all on their performances. It's a great start to a long season with high standards and expectations already set by the lads.

SENIORS

program thumbWeston's seniors kicked their season off at home against the newly promoted Lake Macquarie Roosters. Lakes were sporting a host of ex-Bears it was always going to be a tasty contest.

The U18s after taking the lead conceded a late penalty to eventually go down 1-2.

The U20s started their campaign with a fine 1-0 win even though down to 10 men.

The Bears 1st grade opened well and looked very comfortable on a super surface and began building pressure on the lakes defense. However, a defensive lapse of their own saw an unmarked Lakes player receive and slot home the game's opener.

Weston continued along the same line and were rewarded shortly after with a penalty that was slotted home by jake Millsteed.

Comfortable in possession and patient in their build up Weston still looked comfortable but it was another defensive lapse proving Lakes their second goalscoring opportunity which they took with a fine finish to make to scores 1-2 and how the teams went to the sheds.

The Bears resumed the second half positive as the first. James Thompson was very impressive and it was a ghosting run by him that drew a free kick around 23 yards out. Jamie Byrnes stepped up and delivered a special to square the scores up at 2-2.

Lakes looked to create their won opportunities, their best being a fierce shot from distance that went close. Weston then defied physics when a great Nick Thompson run and rocket left foot shot hit the woodwork, fell favourably but could not be forced home. A further opportunity arose when the Lakes keeper flapped at a cross with the bears unable to convert at the back post.

The game the see-sawed with half opportunities and the heat clearly taking the sting out of the game.

Weston did have further opportunities when jake Barners glancing header flashed across the Lakes goal.

The last minute of the game provided 2 more opportunities for Weston to claim the points via a well hit and saved long-range effort and a misplaced back post header from the resulting corner.

Points shared on the day but many positives to build upon for Weston.
